Oakville festival to highlight independent films

The Wilson Oakville Film Festival will again be held this month, bringing a selection of independent feature films and documentaries to the Toronto suburb.

The festival distinguishes itself from other film events through a focus on education and community engagement, with screenings often including talks with professors and authors to give context to the movie. Many of its films originate in Southern Ontario and deal with local concerns, although international cinema is also represented.

The festival’s slate includes locally-produced comedy-drama A Girl, A Boy, A Penny and a Very, Very, Very Long Road, as well as British spy drama Red Joan and the autobiographical nature documentary The Woman Who Loves Giraffes.

Developments in film technology have made it possible for independent directors and producers to create visually striking movies on a much smaller budget than Hollywood blockbusters. These films often tour festivals like this one, using poster printing and Promotional Products to advertise themselves.

The 2019 edition of the Wilson Oakville Film Festival will take place at the FILM.CA Cinemas on June 22 and 23. To build anticipation, the festival is hosting outdoor screenings of popular family movies, which started yesterday and continues until June 13, as well as a gala event featuring singer Chantal Kreviazuk on Wednesday, June 19. The festival is hosted by Oakville Festivals of Film & Art, a nonprofit organization that also holds events throughout the year.
