The World of Threads festival is making its long-awaited return this fall, featuring fabric creations from local artists, as well as those from across Canada and the world.
The festival will feature 426 works of art by 115 artists, all in some variety of fibre. Some of the international countries represented include New Zealand, South Korea, and the United Kingdom. World of Threads boasts of being guided by the artworks submitted instead of any predetermined curatorial vision, grouping similar pieces together from thousands of submissions. Past editions of the festival have also presented community awards to highlight those who have made a difference in the Oakville area.
Exhibitions at the 2023 festival include themes like “Amorphous”, “Cat Walk”, and “Wings”, as well as solo shows focusing the work of individual artisans. This will be the first edition of the festival in five years, after the 2020 and 2022 versions were cancelled for public health reasons. The festival is supported by a cultural grant from the Town of Oakville and curated by Gareth Bate and Dawne Rudman. Arts festivals such as this bring together lovers of Forms ranging from graphic design to sculpture, and can help expose artists to new audiences.
Following an opening reception on October 14, the 2023 World of Threads Festival will run for two months, with all works on display at the Queen Elizabeth Park Community & Cultural Centre in Oakville.
