Oakville clean-up to mark Earth Day

An annual Earth Day clean-up of Oakville’s nature sites will return this year after the previous two editions were cancelled.

The event is the 31st annual Earth Day Clean Up, and is put together by the Oakville Independents Community Outreach Team. Volunteers work to remove trash and other debris from Oakville’s park and public places, preparing them for the spring influx of visitors. The effort can contribute to high school students’ mandatory volunteer hours, while others of all ages enjoy spending the day outside benefiting their community. Similar cleaning and beautification events, often attracting volunteers through flyer printing and social media, are especially popular around the international holiday of Earth Day.

The Clean-Up, which was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 to allow for social distancing, will still have a number of safety measures in place to allow for volunteers to feel comfortable. The Oakville Independents also host a number of other beautification efforts throughout the year, including the Adopt-A-Park and Adopt-A-Road Programs and snow shoveling during the winter for those unable to do it themselves. The Clean-Up is also supported by Oakville’s Parks and Open Space Department and Halton Region Waste Management, along with many local businesses.

The 2022 Earth Day Clean-Up of Oakville Nature Sites will take place on the morning of April 23 and kick off at Kinoak Arena.
