Oakville’s Film.Ca Cinemas is currently closed to the public, but the theatre has been staying busy by filming two episodes of an original comedy series set at an independent cinema.
The series, called Coming Distractions, was created by Oakville’s Marc Grant. Grant filmed a pilot episode in 2017, shot in the Film.Ca building and around Oakville. The first episode acted as proof of concept to help secure funding, including a crowdfunding effort, and the theatre shutdown provided an opportunity for shooting in a socially distant manner.
Two more episodes will be filmed, this time with Gina Simone stepping into the director’s chair. Felicia Simone, who starred in the pilot episode as Rebecca, will also return.
Film.Ca owner Jeff Knoll is overseeing the production and providing inspiration based on real events that have happened at the theatre over the years over its 16 years of existence. The goal of the production is to create a full season of comedy. As movie theatres like this reopen, the owners will likely be looking for ways to entice people back in through tools like Promotional Products and discount rates. Having a chance to explore a small-screen set could be another such enticement.
The second and third episodes of Coming Distractions will be released on streaming platforms like YouTube and Zuzu Video on Demand, which currently host the pilot episode. Film.ca Cinemas is set to re-open to the public at the start of Step 3 of Ontario’s re-opening plan in late July.
