Oakville choir appoints new director

The Oakville Choir for Children & Youth has announced its new artistic director – renowned conductor and educator Maria Conkey.

Originally from Newfoundland and Labrador, Conkey was previously Artistic Director at Young Voices Toronto and also conducts at St. Michael’s Choir School. She will take over the Oakville Choir’s educational programs, which provide musical education to children ranging from the Little Voices program for kindergarten-aged boys and girls to high school choirs Raise Her Voice and A Few Good Men.

Dr. Sarah Morrison, who has served as the choir’s Artistic Director for the past 15 years, welcomed her successor in a statement:

"It’s a pleasure to pass the baton to Maria Conkey. [...] I know that she will maintain both the welcoming spirit and excellence of the OC and that the singers will flourish under her leadership.”

Conkey is just the third permanent Artistic Director in the choir’s 28-year history. The organization currently includes approximately 150 young people and performs regular public concerts on specific themes or occasions. Musical programs and organizations like this often use tools such as poster printing and social media to reach prospective students as well as celebrate their achievement.

The Oakville Choir for Children & Youth will mark the transition with its next public performance from the Raise Your Voice girls’ choir on May 7, the culmination of the Choir’s “mid-year” season.
