The Oakville Chamber of Commerce, with information provided by the Referral Institute, has presented several networking tips for business in one of their articles. One point that sticks out is the importance of not selling, yet having a business card to hand out to those who you network with.
The title of the article is Networking Tips: 10 Strategies for the Safe Practice of Networking at your Next Networking event. They recommend that you attend two or three weekly networking events. Once you get there, this is what the experts suggest:
1. Do not try to sell anything at a networking event
2. When you talk to people, listen to what they say
3. Prepare a 60 second introduction and practice it before you go to the event
4. Be willing to help those you talk to
5. Mingle, do not just stay with people you know
6. Make sure you bring a lot of Business Cards, also wear a name badge
7. Decide ahead of time how many people you want to meet at the event
8. Spend no more than 10 minutes with each person
9. Treat people like you wish to be treated yourself
10. Make sure you follow up on any promises that you make within 24 hours
Nothing can replace meeting potential business partners or customers face to face and networking events are the perfect way to do this.
