In a press release, the department stated:
“Getting the influenza vaccine every year is the most important way to protect against the flu.
“It also helps to prevent the spread of the virus to those who are vulnerable to complications of the flu. Influenza immunization is recommended for all those six months of age or older.”
Flu vaccinations will be offered to the general public on October 27th. However, individuals deemed to be high-risk for contracting the virus and developing complications can get vaccinated early. High-risk individuals are those 65 years of age or older with existing health problems, as well as pregnant women and first responders, such as fire fighters, police, and emergency medical personnel.
Screening for high-risk people will occur at retirement homes and seniors’ residences. Everyone can get vaccinated at their doctor’s office, clinics, or some pharmacies.
The Halton Region Health Department also provides material to educate people in the area – which includes communities such as Oakville and Milton – on the effects of influenza, and how to prevent the spread of the disease. The organization may have hired professionals for the purposes of poster printing in order to facilitate this public education campaign.
Although getting vaccinated is the best way to prevent the spread of the flu, individuals can also take precautions such as frequent hand washing and staying home when sick.
