Oakville’s nostalgia-fueled fundraiser Back to the Galaxy will hold its 5th annual edition this May, providing retro beats while supporting cancer research.
The evening was created as a throwback to the tradition of DJ groups in the 1980s and 90s, and includes lots of familiar songs and dances. The show will also feature retro cars and encourages attendees to dress in the style of the 80s and 90s. It began as a 30-year high school reunion in 2017 and became a benefit event in honour of DJ Frankie Fresh’s mother. Following the success of this event, the retro fundraiser became an annual event and moved to the 707 Galaxy Club, a popular 80s dance venue, leading to the new name Back to the Galaxy.
There will be food and drink provided, as well as raffles and other games. Past editions have included costumed characters from classic movies, all-you can eat buffets, retro arcade machines, photo booths, and costume contests with cash prizes. The past four editions of Back to the Galaxy have welcomed over 1,800 people and raised over $124,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society, which supports research into cures and treatment for cancer. Fundraising events such as this are often advertised through flyer printing and local media, and can contribute serious cash to good causes.
The 5th annual Back to the Galaxy event will take place at the Galaxy Club on the evening of May 31.
