Some artifacts form Oakville’s past have recently been brought to light due to an archaeological expedition that has been taking place on Dundas Street.
The excavation, which is being undertaken by New Directions Archeology, Inc. before the proposed widening of Dundas Street and reconstruction of other roads, was commissioned by the Halton region.
So far, several artifacts have been found, such as shards of pottery and glass. These indicate that the area was inhabited during the 1800s, and provide a glimpse of what life was like for those who lived there during those times. Back then, the site was home to the thriving village of Palermo.
These pieces of history will be taken to the company’s lab, which is located in Ancaster. There, they will be sorted and analyzed, and the results handed on to the province’s Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport, as well as the Halton region. A Print company will be able to prepare Copies of the final report that can be distributed to any interested stake holders. These can also serve as an important document dealing with the history of the city.
The area used to have many small communities, as Dundas Street was once the main stagecoach line for the region. It was a popular spot for those who had fought in the War of 1812 to resettle once it was over.
