Autism information sessions planned for Oakville

When a boy or girl is diagnosed as having an autism spectrum disorder, it can leave them feeling in need of more information, and a session that will be taking place in Oakville will give them just that.

Autism Ontario will be offering its Understanding the ASD Diagnosis program, which will be facilitated by Heather Kidd and Elizabeth Mitchell. Designed for kids who age between the ages of 9 to 12 with an ASD diagnosis, it will provide them with a wide range of information.

The topics covered will include what an autism spectrum disorder is, what causes them to occur and tips young people can use to navigate their life at home, school and more.

Just as autism can present several challenges, it also provides those with an ASD with certain strengths that they can use to their advantage. This topic will also be covered during the series of workshops, and the instruction will be given using role playing, videos, visual supports discussion and other methods. The parents will participate in the last 20 minutes of each class, which will help the whole family learn more about how they can assist the boy or girl in putting their knowledge they have gained into practice. Comb binding can be used to craft workbooks and other materials for events like this.

The workshops will begin on October 12, and they will run until November 30 in Oakville’s Monarch House.
