The Oakville Curling Club will be putting on its annual Sportsman’s Bonspiel this January to raise money for a good case.
The tournament pits local men’s curling quartets against each other in one of Canada’s favourite sports. Each team is guaranteed four games, with the top 16 of the 32-team field each playing an additional final game for placement. The competition is played over the course of a weekend, which includes plenty of off-ice activities, including meals and celebrations. The Sportsman is one of several tournaments and special events that the club puts on throughout the curling season, including the Lefthander’s World Curling Championship and International Curlers’ Gathering, in addition to lessons.
Money raised from the Bonspiel will go towards Sleeping Children Around the World, which provides bedkits for children in need in developing countries ranging from Honduras to Tanzania, including mosquito nets, clothing and school supplies.
The Sportsman’s Bonspiel has been raising money for the organization for the past 12 years and has raised over $140,000, equating about 4,000 bedkits. Charitable sporting events such as this are often promoted through tools such as poster printing and social media and typically provide commemorative goods or prizes through partnerships with local businesses.
The 57th annual Sportsman’s Bonspiel will take place from January 27 to 29 at the Oakville Curling Club.
