Young footballers make a flying start in Milton

The football team at Craig Kielburger Secondary School in Milton is proving that it doesn’t always take experience to be successful.

This is the first year for the Spartans club, which came about when the smaller EC Drury School closed and several coaches and teachers took positions at the new, bigger establishment.

Last February, a meeting was held to see if there was any interest in forming a new football team at the school, and the 75 students who turned out were ample evidence that there was.

The larger student body and dedicated staff have combined to give the players an excellent start. More than 100 prospective team members showed up for the try-outs in September, and of those who were selected, only three had ever played before. All were willing to work hard and are thought to be excited about what the future holds.

The team is managed by one head coach and seven assistants, and the dedication of the management and players has really paid off. In the first year, the team has risen through the ranks of Halton’s Tier 3.

There are two games left for the season and no matter what happens, the team will finish no lower than third. The next game will take place on October 22 against Frank Hayden Secondary School. If the players continue with their winning streak, the new team may earn a spot in the Nelson Championship which starts in November.

No doubt poster printing could come in handy as the school looks to publicize its achievements in the local community.
