Milton troupe to stage comedy
Milton Community Theatre will be opening up its season this September with its performance of standby comedy The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.
The play tells the story of six pubescents competing in an elite spelling bee, with scenes interspersed from their home lives. The stars of the show will be actors recruited from the Milton community, with adults typically playing the adolescent characters. The play is also a musical with music and lyrics by William Finn, with a book by Rachel Sheinkin.
Stagings of Spelling Bee often include audience participation, with some crowd members called up on stage. The show is recommended for audience members 13 years or older, with some adult humour. Community theatre productions like this often draw on local businesses, such as vintage stores for costume or print shops for brochures and promotion.
Promotional material for the Milton production emphasizes the heartfelt nature of the play:

“While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear "ding" of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter, one speller leaves a champion.”
