Milton event to celebrate One Book

The One Book, One Milton program has announced its 2025 selection and accompanying programming, including a guest talk by author Heather O’Neill.

The program aims to get as many people as possible in Milton reading and talking about the same book, which this year will be O’Neill’s most recent novel The Capital of Dreams. The novel tells the story of a young girl growing up in a war-torn European country, and is described as:

“A compelling dark fairytale that blends mythology with history in a story of war, survival, and personal discovery.”

As part of the program, O’Neill will be speaking in Milton in an event presented by the Milton Public Library. The author will describe her inspiration and writing process, as well as the themes explored in The Capital of Dreams. O’Neill will be in conversation with acclaimed romance novelist Hudson Lin.

In addition to the author talk, the library will be hosting a number of programs inspired by the novel, including drop-in bookmaking workshops, dressmaking lessons, and a writing contest. “One book” programs like this have become popular in cities across North America, often using methods like flyer printing and social media to encourage people to take part in literary culture.

The Heather O’Neill author event will take place on October 8 at the FirstOntario Arts Centre Milton, with other One Book, One Milton programming leading up to it.
