Olympian to contest Milton riding in federal election

Gold medal winner and flagbearer Adam van Koeverden is turning in his kayak oars for the ballot box in a bid to become a member of Parliament this fall. He was nominated by the Milton Liberal riding association to be its candidate in the upcoming federal election.

Van Koeverden will challenge incumbent Lisa Raitt, who currently serves as deputy leader of the Conservative Party. A press release from the party stated:

“[The] long-time Liberal … received early support from a broad spectrum of community and business leaders in Milton and spent several weeks knocking on doors and meeting with the families within the riding.”

Van Koeverden took four medals as a kayaker, the most of any Canadian. He carried the Canadian flag in both Beijing and Athens. His new pursuit will be a bit easier on the arms but will require just as much endurance. Political campaigns require extensive appeal to the voters through door-to-door visits, brochure printing, phone banking, flyer printing, and other Forms of local media advertising.

A total of 800 Liberal party members in Milton selected van Koeverden over riding association president Mian Abubaqr. The Milton riding as currently constructed was first contested in 2015, when it was won by Raitt. Van Koeverden was born in Toronto, and trains out of the Burloak Canoe Club in Oakville.
