Milton Transit and the Milton Public Library have teamed up to help encourage kids to spend at least part of their summer with a good book.
The initiative, which has been named Read and Ride, gives children aged 14 and under an opportunity to access the public transportation service free of charge so long as they show the bus driver their validated library card.
Organizers of the program hope that it will encourage young people to visit the library and discover the rest of the city by letting them travel free of charge.
According to statistics gathered last year, 700 children had their cards validated and used them to make 2,700 trips over the summer months. The Mayor of the city, Gord Krantz., noted that the program has encouraged young people to visit the library, explore the city and make use of the public transit system. He further went on to say that this is an investment in the future of the city.
The Read and Ride initiative will run until September 3, and users can have their library cards validated by obtaining a sticker, free of charge, at Main and Beaty branches of the Milton Public Library. Brochure printers can produce informational materials that can help to make the public more aware of offers such as this.
Anyone who would like to find out more is encouraged to visit the initiative's website.
