The Halton District School Board has successfully been the first Board to introduce a new organics program into its publicly funded school curriculum, which may pave the way for local Print companies to offer printing services in the Milton and Halton areas.
The GreenCarts organic pilot program began as a pilot program back in 2006, with expansion approved in 2008, making Halton the only Board offering offering an educational program in Ontario schools. Since 2006, GreenCart’s 964 workshops have reached an impressive 135,583 Halton and Milton area students. The program is aimed at producing a 70-80% waste diversion rate among students.
GreenCarts is an excellent publication project for printers who can support the educational program in the form of booklet and flyer printing and other Forms of printed paraphernalia to help support the curriculum. Students taking the program learn about the importance of ‘the three Rs’, reduce, reuse and recycle, and are able to share the information with their families, making high quality printed publications essential.
The Halton GreenCart program has thus far received several awards, including the ward of Excellence in Environmental Education by the Canadian Network for Environmental Education and Communication and the Conservation Award by Conservation Halton. The success of GreenCarts may mean an expansion into other publicly funded Boards in the province.
