On the last day of December, Milton residents gathered together, along with the Mayor , to participate in an annual tradition that has taken place each year since 1967.
This traditional way to ring in the new year calls for friends and neighbours from throughout the community to join one another for the ringing the town bell in Victoria Park, which is located across from Hugh Foster Hall.
The bell was rung and people sang ‘Auld Lang Syne’, and afterwards, there was time to socialize with one another.
This year’s honorary bell ringers were Barb and Francois fuller, who are long-time community volunteers and supporters of the arts in Milton. They have donated their time and efforts to the Milton Music Teachers Association and also the Milton Centre for the Arts.
Aside from that, they have likewise volunteered with the Milton Santa Claus Parade, the Downtown Street Festival, and the Canada Day Celebrations. In 2013, the Chamber of Commerce selected them as the ‘Person(s) of the Year’.
Though an event like this may be brief, it can be part of what helps to build a sense of community. The more people who come out to participate, the better, and a flyer printing company can produce promotional materials that help to get the word out to the public about this simple yet meaningful event.
