Milton group to present new take on British tradition

The Milton-based Brightside Players will be performing a brand-new play featuring British characters with “Robin Hood and the Golden Goose: A British Pantomime.”

The performance will be in the tradition of British pantomime, an exaggerated theatrical form that often involves music, puppetry, dancing, slapstick comedy, and larger-than-life characters. Audience members are encouraged to cheer at the heroes, hiss at the villains, laugh out loud, and otherwise participate in the show.

The pantomime draws on the traditional legend of Robin Hood and Maid Marion and introduces a mythical golden goose, as well as comedic characters such as a “stinky fairy” and Nanny, with the goal of appealing to a family audience.

The cast and crew of the show have been selected from the local community through auditions held in the fall. The Brightside Players group has put on similar all-ages entertainment inspired by the pantomime tradition for almost a decade, including seasonal productions and street performances at local events in Milton. Festival appearances can help to complement poster printing and social media in selling tickets to local performances. The company was founded by Lynne Wilson and is run entirely by volunteers.

The Brightside Players’ performance of Robin Hood and the Golden Goose will be staged from December 1 to 3 at FirstOntario Arts Centre Milton, with multiple shows available.
