Milton Forum to showcase pair of films

The FirstOntario Arts Centre Milton will be screening a pair of documentaries in the coming weeks highlighting the lives of trailblazing women.

“Steadfast: The Messenger and the Message” is a film chronicling Dr. Jean Augustine, the first Black woman elected to Canada’s House of Commons, recounting her life from her birth in Grenada to becoming a Canadian pioneer. The screening will be presented by current Milton MP and former Olympian Adam van Koeverden. Admission to the screening is free but tickets must be reserved. The screening is designed as a capper on Milton’s celebration of Black History Month.

This will be followed two days later with the screening of the 2022 documentary “Buffy Sainte-Marie: Carry It On”, which chronicles the life of the eponymous Indigenous Canadian musician. The film premiered last year at the Toronto International Film Festival and was nominated for Best Documentary Film at the Director’s Guild of Canada Awards.

This screening is part of the monthly Film Forum series, which aims to expose and encourage discussion of thought-provoking documentaries and features. Theatrical discussion events like this are common at independent and arthouse theatres and are typically advertised through poster printing and social media.

The FirstOntario Arts Centre Milton will screen “Steadfast: The Messenger and the Message” on February 27 and “Buffy Saint-Marie: Carry It On” on March 1.
