The Milton Arts Centre has launched a multi-level virtual dance workshop to help people get moving even while they are stuck at home.
The Virtual Dance Workshop is a weekly drop-in stream that is being held for 10 consecutive weeks, in conjunction with Canadian Contemporary Dance Theatre. The sessions are aimed at all ages and experience levels, and they will teach basic motion and rhythm.
Those who attend all 10 sessions will be labelled “Gold Star Dancers”, but the lessons are also open to drop-ins on a one-off basis. The workshop is part of the centre’s ongoing socially distanced programming, which has included various workshops and live performances over the course of the past year.
The final workshop will take the form of a virtual flash mob that will feature all students moving in unison, using what they have learned in past lessons. The flash mob will be featured during Milton’s online Canada Day celebrations.
Workshops like this are often promoted through means like poster printing and social media, and the organizers have had to adapt to a new virtual format and the challenge of teaching physical motion in virtual space. The physical Arts Centre Milton space is being used as a COVID-19 vaccination site.
The Milton Arts Centre’s Virtual Dance Workshop launched on April 22, and it will run weekly until June 24 over online video streaming.
