Halton residents warned to watch out for weed

Milton area residents are being asked to be on the lookout for a large weed capable of causing a variety of problems.

Giant hogweed, which is a native of southwest Asia, has been found within the city and reports indicate that it is spreading. The invasive species has a sap that can cause severe dermatitis and even skin burns if someone gets it on them and is then exposed to the sun. This is because it contains a chemical that makes the skin susceptible to ultraviolet (UV) radiation.

According to Brenda Van Ryswyk, who is a natural heritage ecologist with Conservation Halton, the reaction can happen every time the affected area receives exposure to sunlight.

She also gave information about how to identify the plant. It is very tall, with large, spiky leaves and clusters of tiny white flowers that look similar to those on Queen Anne’s lace, only the flower heads are much larger. It can be found in vacant and waste areas, along roadsides, in meadows and along the edges of the forest. A poster printing firm can help to design and then Print Posters that warn the public about the weed and let people know how to identify it.

Van Ryswyk recommends that a professional be hired to remove the hogweed should someone find it on their property, but if they wish to have a go themselves, they should do so in the spring and wear protective clothing.
