This month, film lovers in Milton will not have to make the trek to Toronto to take in some hidden gems.
The Milton Film Festival will bring eight films to town in partnership with the TIFF Film Circuit. The goal of the festival is to provide a ‘red carpet experience’, including an evening gala and panel discussions with local filmmakers. The festival will be hosted by Miltonite film critic Ron Base.
The selected films include acclaimed international pictures like The Rider, Chloe Zhao’s meditative study of the modern rodeo circuit, and Colette, a biography of the scandalous turn-of-the-century French author starring Keira Knightley and Dominic West. The festival will also feature a series of short films by Canadian directors, which will likely screen before the features.
While they may not attract the media attention of the Toronto International Film Festival or Cannes, smaller film festivals like Milton’s can be a way for independent filmmakers to gain exposure and for local audiences to take a detour from the multiplex. These festivals often get the word out through tools like flyer printing, graphic design, and the eye-catching graphic design of many movie Posters. The TIFF Film Circuit is a program that brings small events like these to cities across Canada.
The festival will take place on the last weekend of the month, between January 25 and 27 at the First Ontario Arts Centre Milton.
