With the change to an eight-ward single-councillor electoral system, this month’s municipal election in Halton County means twice the candidates, and with them, a plethora of campaign Posters. Only two regional councillors voted against the boundary changes in 2009, with the majority endorsing the proposal to re-arrange the wards to accommodate rapid growth and new populations in Milton and area. Poster printing in Milton and the erection of campaign Signs on town property is in full swing, with a veritable forest of Signs lining boulevards on private and public land, keeping by-law officers busy removing Signs that contravene Town of Milton rules about placements.
With the increased number of candidates, the Town of Milton has provided additional information on the town website with the list of candidates, list of scheduled meeting and candidate forums, voter’s lists, polling stations and the complete Municipal Election Act and the 2010 Municipal Elections Guide.
TVCogeco, the internet and cable television service provider in the region, has devoted a page on its website to the election. Airdates of candidate forums are listed and video broadcasts of candidates are available for viewing.
Campaign hot buttons in Milton this year continue to be taxation, infrastructure and master plans for regional transportation and wastewater.
Like many cities, towns, counties and municipalities across the country, October is election month and poster printing across Canada is at an all time high.
Milton goes to the polls Monday, October 25 to elect a new Mayor, Councillors, Regional Councillors in Halton County, and School Board Trustees. The Regional Chair has been appointed by acclamation. He is Gary Carr, former Liberal MP.
