Changes coming to Milton schools French immersion program

When it comes to learning French as part of their school curriculum, Milton area students will soon find themselves with several different options to choose from.

At a recent meeting of the Halton district School Board, it was decided that beginning in the 2015-16 school year, pupils will be able to enter the French Immersion program in either grade one or grade five.

Under the current system, children can only enter the program at the end of senior kindergarten. This put a lot of pressure on families to decide at that time whether or not they wanted their child to take advantage of the opportunity. Under the new system, they can wait until their child is going into grade five. This will also give the child a better grounding in the English language before they begin intensive studies in another.

It was also decided that French will be taught as a single subject in the English curriculum starting in grade one instead of grade four.

This decision was reached after receiving input from parents, teachers and current school board members. The results of a questionnaire that was sent out at the end of the last school year were also considered.

Part of the plan will include a long term plan to recruit more teachers who will be able to teach in both French and English.

Changes such as this provide an excellent opportunity for educators to utilize the services of a Print company. They can help to produce Posters, Banners and other teaching materials for the classroom.
