Changes coming to animal control in Milton

Residents of Milton will soon see an increase in the amount of coverage provided by the town’s department of animal control.

During a recent meeting of the town council, it was decided that two new animal control officers will be hired and two vehicles will be purchased for them to use.

Until now, the Oakville and Milton Humane Society performed many of these tasks. In recent years, the town has grown, and it was felt that the hiring of these two town employees would not only save money but that it would also allow them to directly control with law enforcement.

Another benefit of the proposed changes is an increase in the services provided. The hours of operation will increase by 75%, but there will still be a net saving of 13%. The officers will be available seven days a week, and will be on call for emergencies 24 hours a day on a rotating basis.

The new plan includes contracting the care, housing, and adoption of animals to the City of Burlington, which will also provide licenses to dog owners. Signage produced by Print companies will inform the public of any changes in bylaws and public policy relating to their pets.

The Oakville and Milton Humane Society supports the plan, and says it understands that the town’s growth has resulted in a greater need for these services. It is currently reviewing what effect the changes will have on next year’s budget and will continue to investigate cases of cruelty and neglect.
