New conservation hub announced for Hamilton

The Hamilton Conservation Authority has announced plans to build a new education hub and restore wetlands in Stoney Creek.

The project has been under consideration since 2011 but has made a major step forward with a $6 million donation from the Heritage Green Community Trust. The gift is the biggest in the Authority’s history. Conservationists aim to restore and maintain four wetlands in the Saltfleet Organization Agency, and currently have completed two.

The complete project will span across 411 acres, and has already led to the return of wildlife like frogs and toads. The restoration of the third area near the Devil’s Punchbowl will include native planting and connections to the Dofasco 2000 Trail. The organization says that these wetlands:

"Will help reduce the risk of downstream flooding and erosion, improve water quality, create habitat for wildlife, and provide expanded trails and outdoor recreation opportunities for the community."

The project will also develop an education space, based out of a former market building. The space will have interactive displays, classrooms and office space. Spaces like this often use brochure printing and promotional items so that they have something for visitors to take home. Design and preliminary construction are set to begin in 2027.

The Hamilton Conservation Authority announced the funding gift on May 27. Development is set to be complete by 2030.
