Maple Leaf Foods opens bakery in Hamilton
Maple Leaf Foods opened what is being called Canada’s largest bakery in Hamilton on September 28. The 385,000 square foot facility will provide up to 300 full-time and 30 seasonal jobs to the city. Mayor Bob Bratina has stated that this brings “significant benefits to our local economy.”
The bakery provides white and whole wheat bread, buns, English muffins and tortillas which are made from 100% Canadian wheat. Consumers in the Hamilton area will now most likely be receiving fresher bakery products which will have a smaller carbon footprint; it is important to the health of the environment that we buy locally made produce and food stuffs. Maple Leaf Foods would be smart to start a local direct mail campaign promoting this fact and offering money off coupons to woo new consumers; flyer printing companies can help them to design a campaign that will be appealing to those in the community.
The new bakery has been designed to conform to LEED certification standards. This is an environmental standard that looks at how self-sustainable a building is, how it uses water efficiently, how much energy it puts out into the atmosphere, which materials and resources are used and what the indoor air and over all environmental quality is. According to Maple Leaf Foods, the new baker fits all these criteria.
While the opening of this new bakery is beneficial to the city of Hamilton, it is also beneficial for the rest of the country. Many worry that building environmentally sound facilities will result in the loss of jobs; this proves that that is not true.
