What's Happening in Hamilton, ON…

Hamilton seeks to protect its water

In the wake of the events that recently took place in Toledo, the city of Hamilton has decided to take some serious measures to protect its water supply.

A bloom of toxic blue-green algae has led to Toledo issuing a warning that its water is unsafe to drink, and that even boiling was not enough to destroy the poison.

In order to help prevent a similar occurrence from happening in Hamilton, the city has undertaken a study to investigate which technologies or methods may help to prevent this from occurring.

During the summer months, algae can “bloom’ due to high levels of nutrients being dumped onto the water from such sources as agricultural fertilizers and other wastes. If winds are strong, this can lead to a process called “downwelling”, where the algae is pushed downwards towards the water intake pipes.

Some of the technologies being looked into include installing new filters, lengthening the current pipes so they reach a lower level further out into the lake, and irradiation to kill off any microorganisms.

Once a decision is made, it will be part of the upgrades planned for the Woodward Water Plant, which are coming between 2016 and 2018. The city is also planning to go ahead with the $300 million in upgrades to its sewage treatment system, which will also help to protect the water supply.

When all the information had been gathered, a print company can compile it into concise promotional materials that will keep the public abreast of what is going on.
