McMaster University and St. Joseph’s Healthcare were extremely fortunate to receive a generous research grant from the prestigious U.S. National Institute of Health for clinical research on asthma and allergies. The five-year study will involve a team of 20 doctors, immunologists and researchers led by Hamilton immunologist Dr. Mark Larche.
Dr. Mark Larche put together a grant application compelling enough to beat out many U.S. competitors, an extremely difficult task. The success of the grant application was dependent upon the quality of the presentation material and the details of the study. Researchers will examine how the immune system reacts to an allergy vaccine developed by Dr. Larche. Another aspect of the study will be to examine the changes in the blood, bone marrow and other parts of the body brought on by an asthma attack. Dr. Larche hopes that the grant will be the beginning of a much larger program funded by outside sources so that the research can expand into other related areas.
