Hamilton okays construction of first of its kind building

Hamilton has become the first city in Ontario to issue a permit for a wooden frame midrise building.

The structure, which will be a Sandman Hotel by Northland Properties, is already in the initial stages of construction. It will be located at 560 Centennial Parkway, and will feature 209 units and also two restaurants and an indoor pool.

The pre-construction phase of the project, which included onsite servicing work, began on March 16, with excavation and the starting parts of laying the foundation beginning on March 23.

The building will be built in accordance with the new provincial regulations designed to make them safe. It will have safeguards against fire such as using noncombustible building materials in the stairwells and roofing components that are also resistant to fire. Brochure printers can create pamphlets that outline these safety measures so that the publican can learn more about them and have confidence that the new building is well protected in case of fire.

On January 1, changes to the Ontario Building Code came into effect that increased the number of stories for this type of construction to six, from the previous four. Hamilton’s Chief Building Official Ed Van der Windt remarked that he is happy to be the first municipality in the province to issue a permit for a wooden framed structure of this type.
