Hamilton invited to learn basics of bonsai

Bonsai is an ancient art form that originated in Japan, and a workshop series that offers an introduction to this practice will soon welcome Hamilton hobbyists.

The Art of Bonsai workshops, which aim to introduce the basics of bonsai, will be hosted by the Royal Botanical Gardens (RBC), and both indoor and outdoor planting will be included. The history of the practice will also be discussed, and at the end of the event, each participant will have a new pot and plant to take care of.

During the sessions, the group will discuss the various trees that can be a good choice for the beginner, and both deciduous and evergreens will be covered. Cultural practices like pruning and wiring, which will cause the tree to remain small and grow in the desired form, will be introduced, as will container selection. The group will discover both traditional and modern styles of bonsai, and the registration price for the series is $350.

While classes like these may cover the basics, participants often want to learn even more. Offering attendees manuals of how to care for their plants and keep them healthy may be appreciated during events like these, and they can be sourced from local print shops.

The first Art of Bonsai class has been scheduled for March 16th, and they will continue each Tuesday evening until April 20th. The RBC website offers more details.
