Hamilton group presents awards to hard-working locals

A Hamilton not-for-profit organization that helps people who face special challenges in their life recently recognized its best.

At a gala dinner for 100 guests held at Michelangelo’s Banquet Center, the group presented its Outstanding Achievement Awards.

The Worker of the Year accolade was presented to baker Harry Russell – a young man with autism who works at Amity’s Stairways Coffee House. The Goodwill Achiever award went to Michael Van Oldenbarneveld, who holds down three cleaning jobs while living with a learning disability. The organization helped these people, plus many more, to find employment in the community, and also provides training in marketable skills to those who need it.

The Business Partner of the Year award was presented to Aramark Canada, which is a company that offers beverage, food, and cleaning services to the educational and health care sectors. It provides employment positions for those who work with Goodwill.

According to the not-for-profit, it has found employment placements for 4,700 people over the past five years, and this year marks the 80th anniversary of the group in Hamilton. It was started in Boston back in 1902, and has grown to have branches in 15 countries around the world.
