Elegant Verve: an exhibition

The Art Gallery of Hamilton is currently hosting an exhibition of French avante garde graphics. The exhibit, entitled Elegant Verve: modern French graphics from the collection, will be running until September 5, 2011. The Art Gallery of Hamilton has been in operation since 1914 and is the third largest public art gallery in Ontario. It features over 9,000 works of art. It addition to the gallery space it features a shop with sells items such as prints, Posters, ceramics and jewellery.

The Elegant Verve exhibit is curated by Tara Ng and helps to illustrate the



“enduring freedom of expression in the graphic arts of France.”




The exhibit features the prints, drawings and sketches of some of the greatest painters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Most of the great artists experimented with all of these art Forms. Those artists featured include such artists as Matisse, Chagall, Leger and Picasso.

Print making helped to make great works of art available to the general public who could not afford original works of art. It is no surprise that great artists embraced this technology to further advance their careers.
