Downsview workshop to introduce native bee species

Many people are familiar with honey bees, but they may not realize they are an introduced species, and a Downsview area activity will explore this in greater depth.

The Toronto Botanical Garden will be offering the public an opportunity to learn more about native bee species such as bumble bees, digger bees, and leaf cutter bees, and the role they play in both the environment and the human food system. Tickets for the activity start at $38.87, and the learning will be spread out over two sessions.

The first workshop will introduce bee species native to North America and how they have adapted to their particular ecological niche. Tips will be shared for supporting their populations, and the group will also find out how they are different from the introduced honeybees.

The second class will be focused on solitary bees, which tend to be very gentle and very effective pollinators. The attendees will find out how they can make their garden welcoming to these industrious insects.

Many people like to learn more about the world around them, and continuing education classes offer a way for them to do so. Handouts, promotional Pens and other materials can be ordered from a local printer.

The first session in the two part Native Bee Discovery Series will take place on May 9th and May 16th. They will be offered at 777 Lawrence Avenue East.
