A Toronto landmark will be celebrating the planet next month with a special festival commemorating Earth Day.
The event, to be held at Downsview Park, will feature hands-on activities aimed at families to help understand the importance of the environment. There will be two sessions of tree-planting led by Nikibii Dawadinna Giigwag, with no equipment or prior experience necessary. Visitors can also participate in litter pick up across the park, along with an Earth Day Scavenger Hunt that makes use of QR Codes, with a chance at prizes available.
The park will feature a marketplace area with craft and food vendors selected from the community to create a festival atmosphere, and attendees can get an early taste of camp life through a campfire with free roasted marshmallows provided.
The Earth Day event will be held rain or shine, with younger family members and leashed dogs welcome. Among the exhibitors will be educational staff providing information on how one can reduce their environmental footprint or connect with local conservation associations. Earth Day is celebrated annually around the world on April 22 and the surrounding week through events such as these, which often use methods like speeches or brochure printing to help provide educational information about the natural environment.
The Downsview Park Earth Day celebration will take place at the park’s Play Zone on the afternoon of April 27.
