Downsview operations centre to play vital role in keeping highways safe

The Provincial Traffic Operations Center, which is located in Downsview, will soon have some new signage to keep updated.

In a recent announcement, the province’s Transportation Minister let the public know that, over the next few years, 50 of the province’s electronic Signs will be replaced by ones that use full color and symbols whenever possible, to describe upcoming road conditions and let drivers know if there are hazards ahead.

They will use accepted, international symbols and fewer words, which will make them easier for everyone to understand. The Transportation Minister noted that the Signs will be monitored by the Operations Centre in Downsview, which will be responsible for keeping them up to date. The centre will send the information that tells each one what they should be displaying via electronic means.

The signage has been purchased from Ledstar, which is situated in Vaughn. It has supplied this type of overhead highway Signs to many different countries, including the USA. The hope is that some of them will be operational by the start of the upcoming Pan AM Games later this year.

While Signs like this can greatly increase highway safety, they can be made even more effective by brochure printers, which can produce publications for distribution that explain the symbols and what they mean.
