Modern dance headed to Burlington

The Côté Danse troupe will be performing in Burlington this January with a presentation of its environmentally themed dance “Burn Baby, Burn”.

The dance performance will be inspired by the themes of fire and ice, along with the changing natural environment. The group is made up of nine dancers and is led by choreographer Guillaume Côté and producers Etienne Lavigne and Anisa Tejpar. The dance uses an original score composed by Amos Ben-Tal.

The performance features a modern dance style defined by athleticism, contours and lines, as well as incorporating traditional ballet techniques. Promotional material describes the performance as:

“The idea of fire as a symbol of passion and intensity is woven throughout the performance, reminding us of the power within us to spark change, but also the danger of letting it spiral out of control.”

The Burlington performance of “Burn Baby, Burn” is part of Côté Danse’s ongoing tours throughout Canada and France, and the group’s only stop in southern Ontario this winter. The troupe often incorporates film projection and theatrical staging methods into its work. Dance shows and performances like this often use methods like brochure printing to explain performance themes and recognize the whole cast.

Côté Danse’s “Burn Baby, Burn” will be performed at the Burlington Performing Arts Centre’s Main Theatre on the evening of January 29.
