Top roller derby players will converge in Fredericton this February for the special Winter Wonderslam event.
The event is presented by the local Capital City Rollers and Fredericton Junior Roller Derby with the goal of showcasing the fast-paced sport. There will be a showcase game for junior players under 18, as well as beginner adult players who have recently taken up the game. The final game of the day will feature an All-Star adult roller derby game with the best players from throughout the Maritimes as well as Maine. In between games and during half-time periods there will be music and games for audience members, as well as the opportunity to buy merchandise and other items from local vendors.
Winter Wonderslam is held in conjunction with the Frostival event, a winter festival which takes place in Fredericton throughout late January and early February. Awards will be given for top performers in each game.
Roller derby is typically a grassroots sport promoted through methods such as poster printing and online streams, and is known for its accepting culture. The game involves a “jammer” trying to pass other players while racing around a track on roller skates, while trying to avoid full-contact blocks.
Winter Wonderslam will take place at the Fredericton Exhibition Grounds on the morning and afternoon of February 1. Discount tickets are available for children under 10.
