The Okanagan Symphony Orchestra will have its new music director Julian Pellicano take the stage for the first time in Penticton with a production of classic symphonies.
Pellicano, who has previously conducted for the National Ballet of Canada and Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra among others, recently became the head of the Okanagan Symphony. Headlining the classical concert will be Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 in E minor. The performance will also include Verdi’s Nabucco Overture, Berlioz’s Rakoczy March, Walker’s Lyric for Strings, and Smetana’s Overture to the Bartered Bride.
The full Symphony will also be joined on stage by the Okanagan Symphony Youth Orchestra and play side-by-side for the Berlioz and Verdi pieces, presenting a unique collaboration to show the Youth’s skills and progress. The Youth Orchestra’s conductor Zeena Zaiyouna will also step in to lead the performance of Rakoczy March.
The Penticton concert is part of a three-night mini-tour for the “Julian Conducts Tchaikovsky” program that also includes stops in Kelowna and Vernon. Each show will also include a pre-concert chat one hour before performance. Classical concerts like this often use speeches and brochure printing to help explain the context of the music and identify the performers.
“Julian Conducts Tchaikovsky” will take the stage at Penticton’s Cleland Theatre on the afternoon of February 7. Discount tickets are available for students and seniors.
