Penticton play to present Shakespearean twist

Tempest Theatre will be presenting a unique take on a theatre classic with its production of “DREAM” in Penticton this summer.

The play, written and directed by Kate Twa, is an adaptation of Shakespeare’s comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The story sees the working-class “rude mechanicals” of the Bard’s play try to escape the comedic subplot they have been written into, only to run into difficulty. This version of the play has been performed before and won over audiences in British Columbia.

DREAM emphasizes physical and comic performances, as well as an intimate connection with the audience. Seats are limited to 80 per show, ensuring that the audience is up close to the action. The show will be coming to downtown Penticton after a five-day run at The Village Theatre at Van Westen Vineyards on the Naramata Bench, the first time live theatre will be performed in the building in a century.

The show will feature local talent in multiple roles, including John Prowse as Bottom, Oberon and Theseus, Taylor Sutherland as Puck, and Anita Hallewas as Quince and Mustardseed. Stage productions often use brochure printing for programmes to help credit everyone who has contributed to the show.

Tempest Theatre’s production of DREAM will play in Naramata from July 1 to 5 and at the company’s building in Penticton from July 8 to 12.
