Burnaby will soon be home to a brand new senior’s residence, and an official ground breaking ceremony was held to celebrate the start of its construction.
On hand for the event was
the MLA for Burnaby North Richard Lee, Housing Minster Rich Coleman, and also the Mayor of Burnaby Derek Corrigan. The city helped to fund the project by contributing an additional $1 million of bonus density money reserved for projects such as this.
The new facility, called Derby Manor, is scheduled to open this spring, and will provide 122 accommodation units. Both owned and managed by the George Derby Care Society and B.C. Housing, they will be leasing eight reserved for people with a low income level. Mayor Corrigan, who addressed the crowd in attendance, noted that the city is in real need of affordable housing for older people.
The units include both one and two bedrooms styles as well as one bedroom with a den. They can be rented for about $2,400 a month, which will include utilities and meals. As it will be an independent living facility, there will not be onsite medical care.
