Burnaby class crafts cottage cheese

Cottage cheese made from scratch can be a real treat, and Burnaby residents will soon be able to learn the secret of successfully making this popular food.

Burnaby Village Museum provides an assortment of learning opportunities, and one set for mid-November will cover cottage cheese. It is for those age 16 and up, and everyone will be working in small groups.

The beginner-friendly activity will teach attendees how to heat, curdle and then strain a batch of this style of cheese, and the students can take what they have learned and make it in their own home kitchen. It will include a discussion of the science behind this simple form of cheese making, and tips for adjusting the texture and using various acidifiers will be shared. A tasting session will wrap up the experience, with each of the attendees being invited to sample a pasta dish using this ingredient. They are advised to bring a lidded container with them so they can take their cottage cheese home.

Cookery classes can be a fun way to learn new recipes and culinary techniques. Stationery printers can provide recipe handouts, safety waivers and other printed materials needed for such an activity.

The Cottage Cheese Making Workshop will take place on November 19th. It will begin at 6:00 pm at 6501 Deer Lake Avenue in Burnaby.
