An exhibit at the Burnaby Art Gallery will give locals a chance to view a sampling of works produced in China for the export market during the 19th Century.
Entitled ‘Visualizing a Culture for Strangers’, it contains works of art from the Barry Till curated exhibit at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria.
The reception will feature a Gong Fu Cha tea demonstration, tea samples and tasting, and tea leaf readings.
Those who come out to view the works of art will learn about how many of them were created in Guangzhou in China to be exported to the West, where there was an increasing interest in Chinese life and culture. They were painted using western media and techniques, and the subject matter was often the life of the average person living in China at the time. Western influences can be seen in many of the paintings.

An event like this provides residents with a chance to see works of art that they might not otherwise get to experience, and a poster printing company could produce high quality reproductions of them.
The exhibition will run until March 29th.
