The city council in Burnaby has approved a plan that will make accessing childcare much easier for those families who need it.
Local authorities approved a memorandum of agreement that will see it partner with the Burnaby School District to construct 12 new childcare centres at different Burnaby Schools.
The funding for the project will be covered by the city, while the school district has agreed to provide the land for the facilities. The centres will be run and staffed by not-for-profit childcare providers.
The funds for the construction will not come from tax dollars; rather, they will come from monies contributed to the city by developers in exchange for bonus density amounts. With the schools providing space, the construction of the childcare centres should come in at around $500,000 each, which is much less than if the city would have had to purchase the land.
With the construction of these new facilities, the number of spaces for children will increase over the next two years by as much as 500. A recent study found that a shortage of spaces was a large concern for city residents, and it was a significant factor in them being able to work outside the home.
Once the construction of the spaces is completed, they will need to be decorated in a manner that is appropriate for the children who will use them.
