Older residents of Burnaby recently came together to discuss the topics that they feel are of greatest concern to them.
Two meetings were held, and about 60 people showed up for each. According to Mariam Larson, who is the coordinator of Voices of Burnaby Seniors, she was very excited to see how engaged and dedicated those who came out were to helping themselves and others.
The areas that were identified as being of greatest concern were community services, information availability, income, and the affordability of goods and services.
It was reported that, in spite of community guides, many seniors are not aware of the services that are available to them. This is an area where a printing company can make a big difference. The group can identify how best to reach those who need the information, and printed materials can be produced accordingly.
The affordability of housing, prescription medications, and other items was also a topic of discussion, as well as how best to reach those older adults in the community who may be isolated form others.
It was hoped that those who took part in the discussions will take back what they have learned to their friends and families, who can use the information. The next meeting is scheduled to be held on March 17th. Those interested in attending can call Ms Larson at 604-515-1718 for more information.
