The Bob Petrie Metrotown Library has recently been awarded a substantial
amount of funding from both the municipal and federal governments.
The total funding received was $400,000, with $200,000 coming from a grant through the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program. The city will match this amount.
The chief librarian Edel Toner-Rogala announced that the monies will be used to provide upgrades and enhancements to the facility's second floor area. The plans include improvements to the current shelving and furniture, as well as the addition of more small sized meeting spaces. More electrical outlets will also be installed to make it easier for patrons to charge their electronic devices while they are using the library.
Toner-Rogala also notes that many people want to have small private areas where they can work with friends on a project without bothering others or being disturbed themselves, and these new rooms will meet this need. Pamphlets could be produced by brochure printers to provide more details about what will be taking place, and how it will improve the experience for library patrons.
The plan is for renovations to begin next spring, with the bulk of them to be completed by May 2017. Officials from the library hope that the work will cause as little disruption as possible to those who use it, and look forward to seeing the improvements.
