When a group of people were out for an evening walk on Burnaby Mountain, BC, they got an unexpected surprise.
They found a small ball python slithering its way along one of the trails. The snake was brought by Mike Hopcraft to the Reptile Guy Rescue and Education Centre, which he owns and runs. According to Mr. Hopcraft, due to its size, he believes that the snake is just a baby, and it should not have been outside at all in the first place.
He further went on to say that ball pythons are not poisonous and do not pose any risk to humans. They are well known for having scales in a variety of patterns and colors , and are a popular type of exotic pet. According to the local SPCA, the snakes are likely unwanted pets left there by people who no longer wanted to care for them.
Mr. Hopcraft advised that those who may be interested in owning an exotic pet to really look in to it before they decide to buy one. He also asked that, should they do so and still find they don’t want it that they take it to an animal shelter rather than abandon it. A pet store or breeder can provide Brochures to potential customers so they can learn before they buy.
He also put out a plea to whoever has been abandoning their snakes on the mountain to stop.
