Young Lethbridge chess players take part in competition

Chess is a game that takes a lot of skill, patience and dedication, and 14 Lethbridge students recently had a chance to hone their skills in a competitive setting.

The first ever Scholastic Chess Tournament saw participants ranging from kindergarten to grade 12 participating in their very first group chess competition. They had to get used to playing with some new rules and a clock, but they all rose to the challenge.

The weekend event was hosted by the Education Faculty at the University of Lehtbridge, the Lethbridge Chess Club and Paradise Canyon Golf Course. According to Andy Davis of the chess club, it went well and it is hoped that it will become an annual event.

The winners will receive trophies or medals, will qualify to play at the provincial level, and may even be awarded a chance to play against grand master Eric Hansen, who is from Calgary but currently lives in Europe. He will be playing in a tournament in Alberta on 30th March.

Since it is the first chance many of the players have had to take part in this kind of competition, it will likely be a very memorable event for them. Printing companies can create award certificates that will help to commemorate their participation.
