What's Happening in Lethbridge, AB…

The value in a Lethbridge little library

Grade six students at Gilbert Peterson Middle School know just how important reading is but also that not every student has access to a book, and have done something to make a change.

Building on the idea of the ‘Little Free Library’, they cut and painted a shelf that will be housed in the grade 6 wing at the school. Students will be able to borrow books, keep them if they wish, and replace them with books of their own that they no longer want. The grade six civics teachers thought that it would provide an excellent demonstration of just how valuable a library can be to a community. It is the reservoir of the printed word and, therefore, a point of knowledge

So far, the project will be confined to the grade 6 wing, but if it catches on, it will soon spread to the whole school. The slogan for the program is “read your heart out with a roar”, which is a nod to the school’s Tigers sports teams.

At present count, there are over 15,000 of these free libraries around the world, and their numbers keep growing. Print companies have a big role to play in helping them to build and grow. Posters can alert the public to their existence, and some companies may even be able to provide some printed materials for donation. It is hope that, through schemes like this, the readers of today will be the consumers of print media tomorrow.
